Somehow I manage to lose my scarf every year. I was thinking about getting the scarf that I mentioned in one of my previous posts, but it was way too expensive and cool for my liking.

And seeing as how I’m always losing my scarves, it wouldn’t be very hobo of me to buy a $42 scarf.

Cue in Old Navy. I saw a commercial advertising scarves for the $1 buc suc on Saturday. Sucwidit! After searching my apartment high and low for $1.09 (tax in CA), I finally came up with the funds to buy a scarf.

I knew that all of the other frugal hobos in the South Bay would be flocking to Old Navy, so I woke up bright and early and rode out to Valley Fair. I ended up picking some muted classic colors, so it would be hard to tell that I got my scarves from Old Navy. If anyone asks, I got them from a less embarrassing store, like Hollister… the outlet.

If you are into hip hop or just art in general, you might want to check out Bret Kranak. His work is in the P2 space at Works right now. This dude’s work is effin sick, and he is still humble as a mother. And can you believe that it’s his first show ever?

While you’re there, check out my piece too. It’s coming down soon.

I’m not one to use drugs, or someone who claims to know a lot about drugs. I do have a particular interest in them, and their effects on people. I love watching drug movies and reading about drugs.

Here’s my photo series on drugs. It will be on display at the members show at Works Art gallery in about a month.

Even though drugs are no laughing matter, this is my satirical take on drug use. Enjoy.

Works has been having an art workshop all week, so I stopped by for a ‘zine session.  It was a great way to pass the time as I waited for the UPS doo to drop off my panoramic photos.

Julia invited us over to her place for yet another BBQ (and for the record, I don’t I will ever get sick of BBQs).  As always there was a lot of laughs and food.

The infamous Cacks gave me his signature necklock towards the end of the night.

One of the many hilarious moments of the night was when Julia and Marc told me that they were “decompositioning” their food scraps.  Mark and I asked them,”You mean composting?”  And second of all you have to dig a hole and bury the scraps, not just throw the egg shells and banana peels on top of the plants.  HAHAHAHAH.  Good effort though guys!

Macaframa was also being looped the entire night.

The Amnesty International show is going on right now at Works Gallery, so I helped out with some of the logistics for the exhibit.

A small group of us rode out to Hellyer Velodrome to cheer on a few of our guys at the track. Jun just came back from Japan with a new toy.  Starf*ckers to the max!

Visited the Andy Warhol and Frida Kahlo exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Art today.  The weather is really poo-ish, but that gave the surfaces a nice little sheen.  I’m loving my new Panasonic FX37, although the image quality isn’t the greatest, the 25mm 16:9 is unrivaled.

I also tried my hand at some overlaying pop art- I think I’ll leave the screenprinting to Warhol.

Ordered some new glass for my camera; kinda sick of using the 50, every single shot is so effin close cut. Hence the reason why I haven’t been posting all too much this week. It should be coming by early next week.

Anyway we had a movie night at Reggie’s last night, for a pretty cool SXSW flick called Medicine for Melancholy. Shot in San Francisco, a pretty hilarious movie in it’s own right. Lots of awkwardness which I can relate to….fart

One night stands and bikes ftw!

My apologies for not posting in a while, but I have been going non-stop since last week. It all started off with a trip to Vegas, then an immediate “arts n crafts” party for the alleycat, to the art show and shenannies afterwards, to a day of climbing in San Francisco, to the actual Alleycat. Everything has been a huge blur, I don’t even feel like writing/posting much. Pictures are a mess too, so deal with it. Finally have day to just relax. Haha. Riding up and down the Las Vegas Strip was sick.

Let’s see, Halley was having one of those not party parties at her house, so we all gathered around for the typical fun and festivities. There was plenty of aero stuff going on, like knitting and baking, so we had to even it out by grilling some man meat.

After we had enough grub and fun, we rode over to Kaleid Gallery for the art showing they had over there.  Because we all know about art.  We even instituted our own art piece, by bike piling right up against the glass for all to see.  Then it was on to South 1st Street Billiards for some pool and PONG.  Finished the night with another great show by Case in Theory.  Ahhhhhh, unemployment gooood.

Alex received word about a free screening of Helvetica from his old graphic design professor, Joe Miller, who also happens to serve on the Board of Directors at Works.  I’ve been meaning to see this movie for quite some time, but never really got around to seeing it.  I have always been fascinated by typography, and I had heard good things about the documentary.

A few of us headed over to Art Ark Gallery, where the “intimate movie night” was taking place (only a handful of us were there).  The movie night was being sponsored in part by PBS’ independent lens series.

The movie is really good, as it gives insight to the history and dynamics of typeface.  You really get a feeling of how ubiquitous Helvetica is; I mean just look around..right now!  Joe Miller’s brief talk was also really interesting, as he went into the other typefaces leading up to Helvetica.

Then to make the night even better, there was a survey making the rounds for 10 free itunes songs!  “Are we human, or are we dancer,” here I come!  (Still have yet to hear the song haha)

Last night the group headed out to Fowler Park in East San Jose.  It was actually my first time on this route, and I was pleasantly surprised by the nice neighborhoods and views on the east side.  The total ride was approximately 18 miles give or take.  It really sucks because all I had was my point & shoot, so the pictures didn’t come out too nice.

The weather was seriously cold, and to add to that I blew yet another TWO tubes going over a fatty pothole.

Spiro invited us to go to Sabor, and then decided not to show up for his own birthday.  Haha.  He missed out because the whole team was working it all night long.

Tina was able to find herself a man, err World War I survivor.  Good for her!

I would post the next picture in the series, but I’ll try to keep this blog safe for work.

Also had a board meeting tonight for Works, and apparently there is a chance that the gallery could move to….my building!  The owner of my building, has two closed shops underneath my apartment.  One is an art gallery, and the other is a wine type boutique.  Neither have been open for years now.  I think it would be a great opportunity for Works, and also it could help out with filling the huge void in my building.  And best of all, it would be right underneath me!

I wanted to re-create the record store experience at my home by constructing a poorman’s listening station.

The only things I had were nails and a hammer. So I hammered in two nails, and placed the jacket on top.

Now I have a place to prominently display the cover work of whoever I am listening to.

Have you realized how frugal I am yet?

For those of you on Facebook, you may already know about the group “Sleeveface.” I don’t have a Facebook account, so I just recently found out about this trend. Pretty neat.

Since I don’t have an account, I am going to make you guys suffer through my Sleeveface. And Sir Paul, I mean no disrespect whatsoever (great album). Check out CubeMe for some more clever faces.

When I first moved into my new place, all of my walls were just plain white. So what is one to do? Well, a great way to spice up your space is to add nice wall art.

I chose to Rasterbate my photo, and then mounted it to my wall. Even though this method is getting quite tired, I still think it looks scrumdiliocious.

Below is the method I used to create the piece shown above. Materials I used: Photo, foam posterboard, X-acto knife, glue stick, 3M Command Adhesive, Kinko’s color laser printer.

  1. Find a photograph, image or picture of whatever you want.
  2. Upload the image to Rasterbator.
  3. Follow the directions and choose your desired size.
  4. I chose to print my Rasterbated images at Kinko’s (they were having a .49 color copy sale), since they have color laser printers.
  5. After I got the print outs, I used a paper cutter to cut the white borders off.
  6. I bought foam posterboard from Michael’s, and then cut them so that they would match the size of my print outs.
  7. I glued the print outs to the posterboard, and then mounted it to my wall using 3M Command Adhesive (one of the best inventions ever for apartment dwellers like me).

Total cost: $25 (less if you use your own printer)
